Azura Quilalea Private Island Press
INDWE MAGAZINE, Azura Quilalea, July 2016
If Quilalea belongs to anyone, it’s to the hermit crabs, which scurry – in shells of all shapes and sizes – across its paths, beaches and forest floors. The brave ones will keep walking as you pass by, while the more timid will quickly retreat into their shells until the “danger” has passed. As well as being shelter from the elements and predators, their shells must also be comforting homes, snug and warm, where they can escape the worries of the world for a while. And that is exactly what Quilalea Island is to its guests – a supremely comfortable and luxurious hidey-hole where real world concerns are left far behind, the air is perfumed by warm ocean breezes, and romance rules supreme. INFLIGHT MAGAZINE, Azura Quilalea, July 2016
It’s hard to tell where sound is coming from underwater, so we all pulled ourselves upright and swivelled, looking into the endless blue in all directions. Could it be a manta ray? It was completely the wrong time of year for a whale, but whatever it was, high pitched squeaking – an uncommon sound during a dive, when usually all you can hear is your own breathing – could only mean something good. And then a movement caught my eye, a flash of silver in the distance as a beautiful pod of dolphins skimmed by. Being wary of divers – paradoxically so, considering how curious they are of boats – they were skittish and soon gone, but had we not all had regulators in our mouths, I’m pretty sure you would have seen gigantic grins all round. Life on Azura’s Quilalea Island is one not governed by time but by the ebb and flow of the tide, and the warmth of its people. Chris Buchanan lost track of about three days. J.R.R. Tolkien’s inspiration for Treebeard in the lord of the rings must have been the baobab. They’re majestic trees that seem wiser than others around them and they wear the scars of an African climate with the same character as those of a tribal elder who has spent his life exposed to the elements.
