Whaleshark visits guests at Azura Quilalea, 17 October 2016
Guests at Azura Quilalea Private Island went on an Ocean Safari around the island in hope to see dolphins and some turtles but they got more than what they hoped for when they were paid a surprise visit by a very friendly 6m baby Whaleshark. They snorkelled with it for a while and it followed them right up to the boat.
Imagine turtles hatching under your feet -Azura Quilalea May
Our guests were all enjoying Pomegranate G&T's at the Beach Bar tonight, when one of the ladies squealed - something was wriggling on her toes in the sand.......as they all looked down, they noticed more wriggling in the sand around the beach bar - to their amazement, little turtle hatchlings were everywhere, all around, scampering in all directions. They had hatched on the beach and quickly became disoriented by the lights. Everybody got to work collecting miniature wriggly turtles and taking them down to the water. Once all the hatchlings were safely dispatched out into the open ocean, our guests sat down for a romantic dinner on the beach - still buzzing from the experience of a lifetime at Azura Quilalea Private Island

They enjoyed their stay and spend their days here diving, fishing, kayaking and even indulged in some much needed massages. The highlight of their stay was the baobab bath which was set up on their villa deck.

Another successful fishing day with our guests
Our Sports Manager at Azura Benguerra and our guests enjoyed a half day fishing and it proved to be a fantastic morning out on the ocean. The day started a bit rough but it only took about 15 minutes for us to get on the fish with 2 X skipjack tuna in the hatch in no time. We carried on catching skipjack until we could find the Yellowfin Tuna. After a while we found them and they gave us some fantastic fights. We ended up boating 3 of 8Kg, 12 KG and a 15KG fish. We lost 5 Yellowfin Tuna that day with one estimated to be in the 30KG class. We ended off the day trying to catch a shark with a skipjack and we pulled tight on one only for the shark to absolutely annihilate our leader and he got away! A great day out on the water!
Azura Quilalea, March 2015

A beautiful shot of the group out on a dhow cruise; Abdul going for a GT (a successful catch and release) ;Fish Eagle going out as Tristan and the team go in, "looks like he was watching where the fish were hanging out", said Tristan ;and a breath-taking image of the sea with no wind, "almost looks like glass", he commented again

Diving at Azura Quilalea
This is a photo of one of the hawksbill turtle that is often seen on the house reef at Azura Quilalea. They are so friendly on the dives that often they join us for a few minutes on the dive, swimming around everyone almost as if they are looking at the dive gear and trying to figure out how they could get a tank and regulator onto their back.
One of our guests got their hands cleaned by the cleaner shrimp on the house reef. Very fascinating to watch. Our guests also had the most amazing experience during one of the dives, when they saw a beautiful green turtle sleeping on the mushroom coral and they were able to swim right up to him. It must have had a long night. There were also loads of ribbon eels and blue spotted sting rays.
Fishing at Azura Quilalea, December 2014
Our guests at Azura Quilalea enjoyed fishing during their Decmber holidays. They made some big catches. The young guests were so excited with their big catch, and took some amazing pictures with the Giant Trevallies before safely releasing them.
Azura Quilalea, November 2014
Yes it is that time of the year again in Mozambique. Turtles are already beginning to come ashore to nest. A precious moment of a turtle after nesting was caught on video at Azura Quilalea. Click here to view video.
Azura Benguerra, October 2014
We are in for a very exciting season. Azura Benguerra had their first Marlin Charters of the season and they proved to be very eventful. On their first day they fished the shallow areas looking for Marlin, they saw a school of tuna boiling in the distance and started making their way for them to catch some live bait when bang, a beautiful marlin was jumping out of the water with our Kona in his mouth, they fought this fish for about 15 minutes before it sadly got taken by a shark.
The next day saw the team catching Tuna left right and centre with the biggest of the day being 22KG, unfortunately no marlin were seen on this day. On the last day, the team went purely after live bait and with many bait balls around it wasn’t soon before they had their first live bait of the day rigged up and in the water. What followed was a day of chaos and frustration with their first live bait getting taken by a shark within a couple of minutes.
They then decided to fish deeper and clearly their persistence had paid off when they had a beautiful marlin of around 400lb take the live bait from just behind the engines, as they started to fight though they had realised that our friend in the grey suit had found them again and had taken their marlin… AGAIN!!!! The water looks to be warming up and if the last 3 days are anything to go by we are in for an exciting season!
Azura Selous, October 2014
Fishing at Azura Selous keeps on getting much interesting. The younger guests were very successful with their fishing, pulling out a number of Tiger Fish, one of them measuring a whopping 4,5Kg.
Azura Benguerra, July 2014
July started off a little bit windy but as soon as the cold front passed us by and the wind died down we were greeted with beautiful diving conditions. The water has been a comfortable 24C and for the most part it has been beautifully clean with visibility ranging from 15 to 25 meters. We had an incredible rare occurrence on our first dive with our new Go Pro when a Dugong swam right up to us to say hello!! We were busy with an Advanced Open Water course with 2 brothers from Switzerland and we all just enjoyed the moment. We ended up with about 90 seconds of incredible rare footage of this graceful mammal! As soon as the movie is complete we will send a copy through for everyone to see.
Furthermore we have had some incredible sightings of sharks and turtles with a very brief sightings of a humpback whale swimming past. One of our guests is seen on the image above hard at work bringing in his Marlin for the picture, he had to release it again afterwards though as we have a catch and release policy at Azura.
If these are all signs of what to expect for this winter it’s going to be a fantastic time to be exploring the reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Azura Quilalea, June 2014
In the past month guests have been catching large king mackerel, the largest being 21kg. A few tuna here and there have been caught and even a dogtooth tuna. Our guest Sarah managed to land a nice size GT recently. And then of course the whales will be here soon and that means that the wahoo will be showing up as well. Guest Graham was the lucky one to have the first catch of a sailfish of the season, It was a real surprise since he and his guests were actually going for Tuna and hooked into 3 sail fish of which they landed this one. This was the very first fish that he has caught, not a bad start.
The water around Quilalea has been super clean the past 2 weeks. Even the snorkelers are able to see down to 20meters. We have had loads of turtles all over the house reef which is located right in front of the main beach. Almost every dive we have seen at least two Green and Hawksbill turtles. We have discovered on one of the dive sites called Casino Royale that there are a large number of Green turtles, with no less than 5 on any given dive, and can highly recommend including a dive here during a stay at Azura Quilalea.
The Annular Solar Eclipse made for a spectacular show yesterday as our guests and staff gathered to witness and admire nature showing off in this event only happening again in 84 years!
At Azura Quilalea in Mozambique the eclipse’s peak was visible as a “ring of fire” encircling the black Moon, and it could be seen using viewing glasses, homemade camera obscuras and covering camera lenses, it was also observed in the very strange and beautiful shadows cast on the beach around the island. Azura Quilalea was in the centre of the moons shadow and we had Astronomy Expert Johan Strydom to excite our guests.
Azura Selous in Tanzania was not directly aligned to the moons shadow, however the partial solar eclipse could be seen from there due to the fantastic location we have. Our guests and staff observed while listening to the hippo echoes from the Ruaha River
